Bass Auditions
Which ensemble is right for you?
Of course, there are always exceptions. But in general, the grade-range in the ensembles is:
String Orchestra: typically grades 4 - 8.
For this ensemble students will need to play two of the scales below, and either a Class C solo or a school orchestra piece.
Philharmonia: typically grades 8 - 11
For this ensemble, students will need to play two of the scales below, and either a Class B solo or a school orchestra piece of equal difficulty.
Youth Symphony: typically grades 9 - College
For this ensemble, students will need to play two of the scales below and a Class A solo. (Students should play 2-3 minutes of a solo. Please show contrasting styles if possible). If the student does not have a Class A solo, you can request orchestra excerpts by emailing Audrey Nowak.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Audrey Nowak, Youth Orchestra Program Manager.
It is highly recommended that for the Youth Symphony audition you listen to the recording as you prepare for the excerpt. Here is a link. The excerpt can be found at 3:15 on the video.
